Football and Tri-Star Football

Football and Tri-Star Football

The East London Optimist Club started sponsoring a team in the London Minor Football Association in 1998. The house league had approximately 500 boys and girls in three divisions ranging in age from 7 to 13 years old. Today over 900 children are playing.

In the early 2000′s there was a division made up entirely of teams sponsored by Optimist Clubs.  The Fanshawe Optimist Club won the bragging rights for the few years it was totally Optimist sponsored.

In 1999 Tri Star Football started its’ punt, pass and kick program. Optimist members Jim Capon, Betty Doyle, Linda Falconer, Irene Grant, Lawrence Lehman, Jason Hamacher and Carol Murray would come out braving the elements by flagging down footballs or handing out t-shirts while sipping on hot chocolate or Timmy’s coffee.

The top fund raisers were invited to an Optimist dinner meeting and these were well attended by guests and members. There would be 50 to 60 people in attendance. Years later I would have kids that attended the dinner meeting come up to me all smiles and tell me how much fun they had at the meeting, eating and the elephant plaque they had received.
